The Things No One Tells You About Being an Artist

If you want to be a successful musician there are some things you’ll need to know to set yourself up for success in the music industry.   There are areas outside of playing music that you’ll need to get a handle on so you can have a long career as a musician.  This posts highlights several of those areas.

Your Photos-  Be careful of the photos you take.  You need to know that any photos you or anyone else takes of you can end up in the press and you don’t want to have any images online that can threaten your or your bands brand or reputation

Interviews–  If you are doing an interview for a publication, email your responses if possible to make sure you are not misquoted.

Money-  You must know your value and make sure you get paid for your work.  If you don’t bring up money, the person you’re working with may not bring up the issue to get a free pass not to pay you.  You need to set up payment or payment terms in advance so their are no misunderstandings with your compensation.

Fans– Many fans will idealize your career, assume that you’re life is smooth sailing, and you’re raking in the dough.  You may love what you do but many will not understand that your job as an artist is not always fun and will be challenging at times.
